From Elephants to Temples: A Magical Experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand

If you’re looking for the perfect blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation, Chiang Mai, Thailand, is where you need to be. After the hectic streets of Bangkok, Chiang Mai felt like a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. Nestled in the northern mountains, this city offers stunning temples, ethical animal experiences, and an atmosphere that feels more relaxed and intimate than its southern counterpart.

Our time in Chiang Mai was the perfect balance of interacting with majestic elephants, exploring centuries-old temples, and strolling through lively night bazaars. Here’s why Chiang Mai should be at the top of your Thailand itinerary and what made it one of the highlights of our honeymoon.

The Elephant Sanctuary Experience: Ethical, Magical, Unforgettable

One of the main reasons we visited Chiang Mai was to spend time at an elephant sanctuary. Before our trip, we did a lot of research on ethical tourism in Thailand, and we wanted to make sure we supported a sanctuary that truly cared for the well-being of the elephants. There are a lot of places that advertise elephant rides, but they’re often exploitative, and the elephants are not treated humanely. So, we opted for an experience that was completely ride-free and focused on the health and happiness of the animals. In addition to caring for elephants, they don’t turn any animal dropped on the property away. They now have a cat and dog shelter on the property as well.

We spent the night as volunteers and woke up early to walk out to the grounds to deliver breakfast to the elephants and spent the day feeding and caring for these gentle giants. Let me tell you, there’s something surreal about standing next to an elephant as it calmly munches on bananas you’re feeding it. Their size is awe-inspiring, but they’re so gentle. Walking with the mahoots to take the elephants through the river was an absolute highlight.

If you’re planning a trip to Chiang Mai, make sure you choose a sanctuary that puts the elephants first. We visited Elephant Nature Park, one of the most reputable sanctuaries in the area, where the focus is on rehabilitation and care for rescued elephants. The experience was not only heartwarming but also educational—we learned so much about the challenges these animals face and the efforts being made to protect them.

  • Pro Tip: Book your visit to an ethical sanctuary well in advance. These places often fill up quickly, especially during peak travel season.

Temple Hopping in Chiang Mai: A Journey Through History

Chiang Mai is home to some of Thailand’s most beautiful and historically significant temples. We spent an entire day hopping from one temple to the next, and each one was more impressive than the last.

We started at Wat Phra Singh, one of the most revered temples in Chiang Mai. The golden chedi (stupa) gleamed in the sunlight, and the intricate Lanna architecture gave it a sense of ancient grandeur. As we wandered through the temple grounds, we felt a deep sense of peace. There’s something about the atmosphere of Chiang Mai’s temples—calmer, more serene than the bustling ones in Bangkok.

Next, we visited Wat Chedi Luang, a massive temple that was once home to the famous Emerald Buddha. Although it was partially destroyed in an earthquake centuries ago, the remaining structure is still awe-inspiring. The crumbling brick walls, adorned with intricate carvings, tell a story of resilience and beauty.

One of the best parts of temple hopping in Chiang Mai is that each temple has its own unique history and architectural style. And because the city is smaller and less crowded than Bangkok, you can take your time exploring without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

  • Tip: As with any temple in Thailand, be sure to dress respectfully. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering any sacred spaces. I found that it was easiest to bring a scarf with me that I could wrap around my shoulders or waste depending on what I was wearing.

Up-Close with Lions & Tigers: A Nerve-Wracking but Incredible Experience

While in Chiang Mai, we also had the opportunity to visit a tiger sanctuary. This was something we debated about, as interactions with wild animals can be controversial. But after careful research, we chose a sanctuary where the tigers are well-cared for, and the focus is on conservation.

Being up-close with these majestic animals was thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking. The tigers were calm and seemed well-adjusted to human interaction, and the trainers were professional and respectful of the animals. We were able to get some amazing photos, and the experience was unforgettable. However, I would advise anyone considering this to do their own research and ensure they’re comfortable with the ethical standards of the place they visit.

  • Pro Tip: If you’re uneasy about interacting with tigers directly, consider visiting a sanctuary where you can observe the animals without hands-on interaction. It’s still a great way to support conservation efforts.

The Night Bazaar: Shop, Eat, Repeat

A vendor at the market

No trip to Chiang Mai would be complete without a visit to the Night Bazaar. This bustling market is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs, try local snacks, and enjoy the lively evening atmosphere. Compared to Bangkok’s markets, the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar feels more intimate and relaxed. There’s live music, street performers, and vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to street food.

One of my favorite treats was the green sticky rice with coconut ice cream—a dessert that’s traditionally reserved for special occasions in Thailand. It was the perfect combination of sweet, chewy, and creamy, and I’m still dreaming about it.

The market is also a great place to shop for handmade goods. We picked up some beautiful textiles, jewelry, and a few pieces of artwork, all while chatting with the friendly local artisans. There’s something magical about wandering through the market as the sun sets, the lanterns come on, and the cool evening air settles in.

  • Tip: Don’t be afraid to haggle a little, but remember that many of the vendors are selling handmade items, so be respectful with your offers. A smile goes a long way when negotiating.

Why Chiang Mai Should Be on Your Thailand Itinerary

Chiang Mai is one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left. The combination of natural beauty, ancient temples, and ethical animal experiences makes it a must-visit destination in Thailand. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a deep cultural experience, Chiang Mai has it all.

From feeding elephants and exploring ancient temples to shopping at the Night Bazaar, every moment in Chiang Mai felt magical. It’s a city that offers something for every type of traveler, and if you’re planning a trip to Thailand, you absolutely can’t miss it.
